Three Shires Head

Three Shires Head

As a family with two young children, we’re always on the lookout for walks that offer just the right balance of adventure, natural beauty, and little legs-friendly terrain. One of our absolute favourite discoveries has been Three Shires Head, a stunning spot in the Peak District where Derbyshire, Cheshire, and Staffordshire meet. If you’re looking for a family-friendly adventure with scenic views, gentle streams, and plenty of splashing opportunities, Three Shires Head is a must-visit.

Getting There

Finding the best starting point for your family adventure depends on how far your little ones can walk. We opted for the Wildboarclough route, which is roughly 2.5 miles each way. It’s a steady walk but manageable for younger kids who love to explore. If you have older children, the walk from Gradbach is slightly longer and offers even more beautiful views.

Parking is limited, so we’d recommend arriving early to get a good spot. Also, don’t forget to bring wellies or water shoes, as little feet won’t be able to resist the chance to paddle in the stream!

The Walk to Three Shires Head

The route is a mix of scenic open fields, winding paths, and charming stone walls. It feels like stepping into a storybook! Our kids loved spotting wildlife along the way—sheep grazing in the fields, birds soaring above, and even the occasional friendly dog from other walkers. The terrain is varied but never too difficult, making it an ideal walk for families.

About halfway through the walk, you’ll notice the sound of running water—this means you’re getting close! When we finally reached the iconic packhorse bridge and waterfalls, the excitement was palpable.

Why Kids (and Grown-Ups!) Love Three Shires Head

  • Natural Paddling Pools – The shallow waters of the River Dane are perfect for little ones to paddle and splash around. It’s a fantastic way to cool off on a warm day!

  • History and Charm – The ancient bridge and the fact that you’re standing in three counties at once makes for a great story to share with kids.

  • Picnic with a View – We packed a picnic and found a spot on the rocks overlooking the water. There’s nothing better than a mid-walk snack while listening to the gentle sounds of the waterfalls.

  • Plenty of Exploring – The area around the bridge is filled with mini trails, perfect for little explorers to clamber over rocks and dip their hands into the water.

Top Tips for Visiting with Kids

Bring spare clothes and towels – No matter how much you tell them to stay dry, kids will always find a way to get soaked!

✅ Wear sturdy shoes – Some parts of the path are uneven, so trainers or walking boots are a good idea.

✅ Pack a picnic – There are no cafes or shops nearby, so bring plenty of snacks and water.

✅ Arrive early – It’s a popular spot, and getting there early means more time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

✅ Respect nature – It’s a beautiful area, so take your rubbish home and be mindful of the wildlife.

Three Shires Head is a magical destination for families looking for a bit of adventure without a strenuous hike. Whether you’re paddling in the water, climbing over rocks, or simply enjoying the fresh air, it’s a place that promises unforgettable memories.

We can’t wait to go back, and we hope you and your family love it just as much as we do!
